💡 How to Turn a Subreddit into a Business

🗂 Overview:

Thousands of people go viral on Reddit every day.

There are 138,000 active communities on Reddit and almost all of them can inspire or validate a business.

Reddit is packed with groups focused on just about everything, giving you a direct line to see what problems people are talking about and what they need.

⭐️ Examples:

🧐 Opportunities:

Using a tool like GummySearch you can analyse subreddits and categories and determine the common problems and trends.

Here’s a list of some I’ve found with potential:

Opportunity #1: r/tipofmytongue

An AI App could do this. You can train it on some of the Reddit posts from this subreddit to help with some of the more vague requests.

Opportunity #2: r/sales

It seems a common problem for the B2B sales community is integrating AI into CRMs, ineffective cold calls, and difficulties in building rapport while selling.

There are a few businesses you could build for this:

  • AI CRM Service that helps businesses integrate AI into their sales systems

  • Cold Call Training Agency / Cold Call Script Writing

  • AI Personalisation Tool that creates profiles for prospects based on their online footprint.

Opportunity #3: r/ppc

Conversion tracking is one of the biggest problems facing the digital advertising community - it’s a very complex problem to fix. But companies that have provided ways to improve conversion tracking have been very successful.

It’s worth noting, that despite these SaaS companies doing well, conversion tracking is still a very big problem and still has a long way to go.

Creating an agency that helps businesses improve their conversion tracking by implementing systems, processes and tech would be very valuable for a lot of big advertisers.

Opportunity #4: r/seo

With Google introducing a load of new AI features that impact search results as well as releasing new algorithms for helpful content, many businesses are worried that they’ll lose organic search traffic (which is already happening to a lot of websites).

Here are a few businesses that could help:

  • AI SEO SaaS trained on Google’s best practices that can rewrite content and suggest fixes to articles, formatting and website structures as well as recommend ideas for new articles based on real-time keyword analysis.

  • SEO Agency that does the above but as a service helping businesses stay on top of the latest updates and ensuring they can still be discovered organically.

  • Video or Content Repurposing Agency that turns blog posts into videos, podcasts and newsletters to ensure brands can be discovered in more ways. YouTube is the 2nd biggest search engine and TikTok really want to be a search engine. I wrote more about this idea here.

🛠 How to Build:

Identify a Suitable Subreddit

Start by finding a subreddit that aligns with your interests or where you have expertise. Look for communities with active engagement, passion, and a clear need or problem that members frequently discuss.

Engage and Research

Become an active member of the subreddit. Participate in discussions to get a deeper understanding of the community's needs, problems, and what solutions might already exist. This is crucial for identifying gaps in the market.

Validate the Idea

Before diving into business, validate your idea with the community. You could share concepts, ask for feedback, or even propose a prototype of your product or service. Their reactions can provide valuable insights and help refine your offering.

Develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

Based on the feedback, develop an MVP—a version of your product with just enough features to satisfy early customers and provide feedback for future development. This step is vital to test your understanding of the community's needs without overcommitting resources.

This video shows you how to build an MVP properly.

Leverage Community Feedback

As your MVP circulates, gather and analyze feedback. Be ready to iterate based on what you learn. This iterative process is key to creating a product that truly resonates with your target audience.

Formalize the Business

Once you have a product that meets the community’s approval, start formalizing your business. This includes setting up a legal structure, creating a brand, and preparing for larger-scale operations.

Marketing and Launch

Develop a marketing strategy that speaks directly to your subreddit community and beyond. Since the community played a significant role in the product’s development, emphasize this in your marketing to strengthen credibility and appeal.

Scale Up

With your initial community as your base, expand your marketing efforts to similar audiences outside Reddit. Use insights gained from your primary users to refine your approach and grow your customer base.

Innovate and Expand

Finally, always look for ways to innovate and expand your offerings. Use the community for ongoing inspiration and stay alert to new needs and opportunities as they arise.

🚀 How to Grow:

Reddit

Rather obviously, use Reddit to find people affected by the problem/s your business solves. Reply to their posts with value and share how your business is a solution. You can also create posts in the relevant subreddits that provide value and educate the community.

You can use tools like Syften and Ddevi to track Reddit/Twitter for certain keywords - that way as soon as someone posts something relevant to your business you can reply straight away.

You can also use this tool to help you create stories for Reddit to promote your product in a less spammy way.

Video Content

Create videos on TikTok, Reels and YouTube showcasing your product, educating the community and answering frequently asked/searched questions.

Blog/Newsletter Content

Similarly, create content for your blog and newsletter that helps your website rank on Google and engages/nurtures your existing audience.

Paid Advertising

Advertise on Google, Meta, Twitter and anywhere else your audience hangs out. For example, if it’s a B2B solution, try LinkedIn Ads.

Referral Program

Implement a referral program that rewards your customers for bringing in new customers. A compelling incentive could encourage them to share your product more actively, leveraging word-of-mouth marketing.
