💡 Opportunity #1 - Build Free Websites
🗂 Overview:
Now you might be thinking, how is making money with free websites possible? The answer lies in the upsells and services you can offer on top of it.
The premise is this:
Pick a Niche and build a few templates
Charge nothing for setup and personalise the site for the client
Charge for hosting, maintenance, premium features, apps, automation, CRM, SEO, content and so on. Have tiered plans where the most basic is hosting (so either way you make money).
Hosting the website on a private hosting plan will mean that as long as they want to use that website, you’ll keep making money. For a basic $29/m hosting plan you’d make $348 in the first year and over 3 years it’s $1,000. Stack that over.
It can be a bit of work but once the site is live there’d be minimal changes needed.
You can add other elements to it as well like buyout fees if the client wants to stop paying for the services but still use the website and minimum contract terms.
⭐️ Examples:
The Church Co make websites, apps and complete digital platforms for churches. They were making $30k per month selling their services for $20/m - they’ve since updated their model and offering and charge/make significantly more.
180 Sites make websites for the home service industry, charging $195/m - they make $950k per year fully bootstrapped.
👎 Problems:
What people might say against this idea:
Anyone can develop a website these days, why would someone pay for this?
The answer: Anyone can take a photo, why do people pay photographers? People want professional results and even in 2024 many people still can’t make a professional website due to either lack of skills, knowledge or time. On top of this, either way, people still need to pay for hosting and spend time developing the website - if this can be done for them that’s a pain many people are willing to pay for (look at the examples above for proof).
This business model leverages the "freemium" approach, providing basic service at no cost while charging for premium features. Here's why customers might be drawn to pay for this:
Low Initial Investment: Small business owners are often budget-conscious. Offering free setup reduces the initial financial barrier, making the service attractive to small businesses looking to establish an online presence without a significant upfront cost.
Ease of Getting Started: The process of designing and setting up a website can be daunting for non-technical business owners. A service that handles setup and personalization removes a significant hurdle, making the decision to engage easier.
Scalability: As businesses grow, their needs evolve. Starting with a basic, free website allows them to scale their online presence with premium features and services as their budget and requirements increase.
Customization and Personalization: Offering personalized websites, even at the basic level, appeals to businesses looking for a tailored online presence that reflects their brand, without the need for technical skills.
One-Stop Shop: The convenience of hosting, maintenance, and additional services like CRM, SEO, and content creation under one roof is a significant draw. It simplifies operations for the business owner, who might otherwise have to coordinate with multiple service providers.
Cost-Effectiveness in the Long Run: For businesses, the ongoing cost of hosting and maintenance is often more manageable than the large upfront investment in website development. Additionally, the ability to add on services as needed helps manage costs in alignment with growth.
Risk Reduction: Trying the service at no initial cost reduces the perceived risk. Businesses might be more inclined to sign up when they know they can test the waters before committing financially to premium features.
Professional Support: Access to ongoing support and maintenance as part of the hosting and premium packages can be a significant value add, solving the problem of businesses needing to hire technical staff for website upkeep.
