🗂 Overview:

Alex Hormozi recently announced his “biggest investment ever” in Skool.com - a membership platform created by Sam Ovens that allows you to create and manage communities, courses, events and more, all under one roof.

Skool was already popular (see the Trends section), but it became one of the most talked about on the internet overnight after this investment was announced. According to Hormozi, Skool’s host payouts are growing 62% a month - that’s how fast it’s growing.

One of the major reasons community and memberships fail is because you’re hosting it on a platform people don’t use already so you’re asking people to change their habits. This is why Facebook Groups have been so popular because everyone has Facebook. Soon enough, Skool will be the place for communities for this reason - everyone (who wants to be in an online community) will already be there.

📈 Trends:

It already receives 11 million visits a month, and that was before the Hormozi investment.

📊 Stats:

  • About 27.3% of customers use online communities in their decision-making process when buying products or services. (source)

  • Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there's been a significant 81% increase in online community engagement. Gen Z in the U.S., in particular, trusts community sites nearly as much as traditional news sources, and 36% of users prefer online communities for more meaningful conversations. (source)

  • 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month. (source)

  • 76% of internet users participate in an online community. (source)

  • Facebook Groups and Slack are the most commonly used platforms for online communities among organizations, being used by 29% and 23% of organizations, respectively. (source)

  • 79% of community professionals believe that online communities are easier to scale, and 47% find them easier to manage. (source)

⭐️ Examples:

  • Greg Isenberg builds community-based companies and is known on Twitter as the ‘community guy’. He’s an ex-Reddit advisor and sold his community company Islands to WeWork.

  • Jay Clouse built a $500k ARR community called Creator Science, aimed at creators looking to monetize their audience.

  • Max Perzon grew his free Skool community to over 25k people and made over $655k through affiliate sales in his first year.

🧐 Opportunities:

Your community doesn’t have to be in a completely new niche. In fact, it’s probably better if it isn’t - if you see a community working, then the validation is already complete. You can copy their methods and improve in areas where you can. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Find a community you like, figure out what works and what could be improved and do it. Focus on providing as much value as possible to your community members and remain consistent - over time you will succeed.

That being said, communities can form in some very unexpected niches, so if you want to think outside the box on this one, here are a few I’ve found based on some trends:

  • Digital detox challenges - Phones, the internet and social media are consuming people’s lives too much, many people want to fix that.

  • Slow life - People want out of the rat race, fewer nights out, lazy mornings, relaxing vacations, etc.

  • Bodycare - People are starting to double on luxury lotions, at-home spas, and SPF. Searches for sunscreen had a 25% YoY increase.

  • Martial Arts - Things like Jiu-Jitsu, Shadowboxing, and mixed martial arts are all continuing to see huge growth.

  • Badminton - Badminton is starting to see a resurgence, and if the growth of pickleball can tell us anything, this could be huge.

🚀 How to Build/Grow:

How to Build:

  • Define Your Niche and Purpose: Clearly define the focus and objectives of your community. It should align with your expertise and the interests of your target audience.

  • Plan Your Content and Courses: Develop engaging and informative courses or content that address the needs and interests of your community. Use a mix of formats like videos, articles, and interactive sessions.

  • Create a Skool Community: Head to Skool.com, sign up and start your community.

  • Determine Pricing Strategy: You can go down the free Skool community like Max Perzon and sell info products, affiliates, etc on top or you can create a paid community that includes courses, info products, deals, and so on.

  • Engage and Moderate: Actively engage with your members. Encourage discussions, answer questions, and facilitate networking. Moderation is key to maintaining a positive and productive environment.

  • Feedback and Iteration: Regularly collect feedback from your community members and iterate on your offerings based on that feedback.

  • Incentivize Engagement: Create incentives for participation such as badges, certificates, or access to exclusive content.

How to Grow:

  1. Leverage Your Existing Networks: Promote your community through your existing channels - your website, social media, email lists, and other newsletters.

  2. Content Marketing: Create valuable content (blogs, videos, podcasts) related to your community's theme to attract members.

  3. Social Media Marketing: Use platforms like TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to promote your community and its offerings.

  4. Collaborations and Partnerships: Partner with influencers or other communities in your niche to reach a wider audience.

  5. Paid Advertising: Invest in targeted ads on social media or Google to reach potential members.

  6. SEO Strategies: Optimize your content for search engines to attract organic traffic.

  7. Email Marketing: Send regular newsletters to your email list about the benefits of joining your community.

  8. Webinars and Online Events: Host free webinars or online events that provide a sneak peek into the value of your community.

  9. Referral Programs: Encourage current members to invite their networks in exchange for perks.

  10. Testimonials and Success Stories: Share testimonials and success stories from your community members to build credibility.
