💡 Opportunity #1 - Smart Air Purifiers
🗂 Overview:
Air Pollution is the 3rd biggest killer in the world, indoor air pollution alone is the 9th killer whilst outdoor air pollution alone is 7th. So why do we never hear about it?
Sure, we all know pollution is bad - but most would attribute that to outdoor air pollution. Many would probably not even mention indoor air pollution in their top 50, let alone their top 10.
Another threat of indoor air pollution is the amount of Carbon Dioxide you breathe in - in a poorly ventilated room this can seriously impact your health and cognitive abilities. Watch James Nester speak about it in more depth.
One reason it might not be spoken about so much is that it’s invisible, and for a lot of people they’ve become so used to the negative impacts they don’t notice. For this to go viral you’d need visualisations of your room’s air quality.
This bird-shaped air monitor is a great example.
The idea: Sell Smart Air Purifiers with features or add-ons that visualise the impact.
📈 Trends:

📊 Stats:

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately 66 million tons of pollution were emitted into the atmosphere in 2022. (source)
The American Lung Association's "State of the Air" 2023 report indicates that nearly 36% of Americans, or 119.6 million people, live in counties with unhealthy levels of air pollution. (source)
More than 1 in 3 Americans live in areas with failing grades for daily spikes in deadly particle pollution, emphasizing the ongoing impact of air pollution on the population. (source)
ClientEarth, an environmental law charity, has estimated that air pollution causes the equivalent of 40,000 early deaths every year in the UK. (source)
⭐️ Examples:
The Dyson Zone is one of the weirder and more dystopian inventions of late. They’re headphones with an air-purifying mask attached designed to make you look like Bane from Batman. As much as we all hope this doesn’t become commonplace, the stats aren’t leaving much hope.
Coway is one of the most well-known makers of air purifiers made around $3.2 billion in 2022.
Ikea has also released its own air purifier for £60 but It lacks any smart features. They also have a more expensive option for £160 with some basic smart home features.
👎 Problems:
Reasons why people would buy a smart air purifier:
Health Benefits: They reduce allergens, pollutants, and particulate matter, improving air quality and aiding those with asthma, allergies, or respiratory issues.
Smart Features: Integration with smartphones or home automation systems for real-time air quality monitoring, remote control, and scheduling.
Energy Efficiency: Many have sensors to adjust their operation based on air quality, saving energy.
Data Tracking: Ability to monitor historical air quality data, helping users understand their environment better.
Convenience: Features like voice control, automatic filter replacement reminders, and quiet operation add to user convenience.
Awareness and Education: They can raise awareness about indoor air quality, often overlooked compared to outdoor pollution.
Peace of Mind: For people living in high-pollution areas or with health conditions, these devices offer reassurance about the air quality in their homes.
