💡 Overview
This week we will break down how you can sell DIY/Craft/Play kits. It might not sound super exciting but there’s a big market for these types of products and they can help solve a number of problems. For example, this guy made $100m selling quilts and quilting kits.
DIY kits have been around for a while but have seen a significant increase in popularity since the beginning of the pandemic back in 2020.
There's a big market for these kits on Etsy & Amazon but brands like Sculpd and Noah have set themselves apart and have become trusted brands in the space.
The crafting market is forecast to reach over $50 billion dollars by 2024 and is seeing large growth, particularly with millennials, Further to this, 73% of the UK is estimated to have purchased crafting goods in 2020.
⭐️ Examples
👀 Opportunities
1. Kintsugi Kits - Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.
Another way to increase AOV would be to include painting kits as well, as some customers might want to add more decorations to their pieces.
2. Baking Kits - These can be things like cupcake kits, brownie kits, cake kits, bread kits, etc. Obviously, we recommend doing more than just one. Examples can be seen here and here.
If you get your cross-selling and upselling right you should see a high AOV for this store.
3. Art Kits - These kits can be quite varied and you can target at kids or adults.
Glass Art Kits
Mosaic Kits
Watercolour kits
Art Supply Kits - including canvas
Nail Art Kits
Embroidery Kits
Ceramic Letter Painting
4. Novel Craft Kits - Sort of connected to the above but focused more on making novel pieces like a sock or felt animal kits for things like Llamas or Sloths. It could also be things like Macrame Cactus kits, Personalised Bracelet kits, or even Hand Casting kits and Beeswax Wrap kits. If you're doing novel kits, it'd be best to do many of these at the same time. We recommend using Etsy to test if the products are viable before moving to your own DTC store.
There seems to be a lot of potential here to create sleek a DTC brand like Sculpt but for paper. Using the right promotion tools like influencers and paid social ads could help make this become quite popular.
7. Mould/Resin Kits - There are loads of mould kits about below are a few examples:
8. Chocolate Kits - Check out Yumbles for inspiration here. This space already seems quite saturated but that doesn't mean you can't get a slice of the pie.
9. Sensory Kits - Mama of Joy has a few examples of these types of products. They are targeted at kids with autism who get overwhelmed by stimuli in their environment, like sights, smells, or sounds. Other types of sensory products can be found here.
10. Craft Kits for Adults with Disabilities - You can find some examples of what types of kits are good for adults with disabilities here.
🛠 How to build it
If you want to create your own DTC brand, I recommend using Shopify to build your website.
If you'd rather start small, try selling on Etsy, eBay and Amazon.
Use places like Alibaba to source low-cost suppliers. You might also be able to find some better quality suppliers at Product World.
🚀 How to grow it
Google Ads - Be at the top of the SERP (search engine results page) for high-intent searches. If you're on Etsy or Amazon use their ad services instead.
SEO - If you have a website make sure that you are ranking for relevant keywords, the same goes for Amazon, Etsy and eBay. Create blogs about your products and make sure your product pages are SEO optimised.
TikTok - Create engaging content on TikTok. Show people how to use the kits, what they can make, how the kits are made, etc. Sculpd are a great example of how to make TikTok videos for these products.
UGC - Encourage customers to share their creations with you to share on social media and your website. You can also create UGC-style ads/content with sites like Billo.
Pinterest - This platform has a huge crafting community and the demographic of users would most likely fit perfectly. Post organically and run ads.
Influencers - Find influencers to promote your products on TikTok and Instagram.
Wholesale - Sell to craft stores or other stores that fit your niche.
👍 Tips
Etsy provides the least risk here. It’s quick and free to set up and has a big audience already. Once you’ve got a few orders in you can create your own brand and a custom website using Shopify and/or start selling on Amazon.
Focus on one type of kit first and then expand to other areas later.
Focus on a particular demographic to start - Couples, Parents, Elderly, etc
